Have you ever heard people being criticized for not being more active on social media? “You never see them on Twitter anymore.” {shakes head} “I used to see them all the time.”
Step back one quick moment. It’s not about doing it just to be doing it.
What’s the purpose of social media?
It’s certainly different for everyone but I use Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and TikTok for the following reasons:
- To stay in touch with family and friends.
- To meet new people.
- To find and share interesting articles.
- To chat with friends.
There are even more reasons people choose not to be as active on social media as you think they should be. They could be doing any one of the following:
- Meeting people in real life.
- Making money.
- Reading.
- Sleeping.
- Exercising.
Doing something else that’s way more important in their lives or businesses than being on social media. O.M.G.
It could also be that they are {gasp} a little tired of being “on” all of the time. Or tired of Facebook. {raises hand} Or tired of Twitter. It happens.
If you have more important things to do, then scoot right on off here. Don’t let me stop you. Log off Facebook. Shut down TweetDeck.
What should you be doing right now?

Amen! Sometimes I feel guilty for not being “on.” Then I realize it’s usually because I’m “off” doing other, more important things. Thanks for the pep talk!
You’re welcome, Kory. There are many, many more important things, aren’t there?
Yes there are…I’m amazed how many artists are on social media sites alot, having to tell you when something is “sold” must boost their egos or something like that! I’d rather be doing my art most of the time but also welcome learning new ways to get my work out there for people to see.

Yes, I am usually experiencing other priorities in my life if I am not pursuing social media. Thanks Mary for your dialogue on this. I am amazed how many artists are online on these sites and having to announce :sold” everytime a piece of their art sells. Perhaps it makes them feel like they have to share that with the world. I’d rather be painting and creating myself though being on these sites is a new venue for me to show my work.
You’re welcome, Lorain. I think there are a whole lot of people who just don’t understand how social media should be used. If they’re only using it to broadcast when they’ve sold something, they aren’t going to have a whole lot of people, other than their mom, paying attention. 🙂
